Class member Cristobal Colón was the recent recipient of the Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, sponsored by the Schwab Foundation, the Spanish newspaper Expansión and IESE Business School.

Colón was honored as the founder of the organization La Fageda, which helps individuals with diverse mental and physical capabilities integrate in society. La Fageda was launched in 1982 by a group of professionals in the psychiatric field who worked at the Psychiatric Hospital of Girona in northeastern Spain. The group identified the need for a service that would assist mentally and physically challenged individuals in the Catalan region of La Garrotxa.

The original idea was to help individuals find skill-appropriate work opportunities. At its inception, the group mainly concentrated on positions in the textile and handcrafts sector, with support from the local city hall. In 1984, thanks to the support of local government and a banking entity, the organization acquired a working farm, “Mas Els Canals,” where it currently operates. Upon accepting the prize, Colón outlined the history of La Fageda and said: “Society today is in crisis. This crisis stems from a lack of meaning in life and valuing what one has more than what one is. Creating value through relationships based on mutual respect, helps people find meaning in life.”

The Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award seeks to recognize intiatives that create value for the society in which they work.
