Executive Education:
Short Focused Programs
Mission Critical Leadership
This new initiative is part of IESE's Short Focused
Program Series, which targets key management areas via intensive
learning experiences. The next edition is set for May 30 - June
2.
This spring, IESE unveiled an entirely new executive
program, Mission Critical Leadership, as part of its 2006
Short Focused Program Series. Led by Prof. Paddy Miller, the program
was held on the Barcelona campus, March 14-17, and included participants
from a wide range of countries and sectors.
A second edition of MCL is slated for May 30-June 2.
“In today’s globalized world, organizations are evolving
fast and leaders have to be ahead of the game,” says Prof.
Miller, who is author of the book Mission Critical Leadership:
Getting You and Your Business Up to Speed in the New Economy,
published by McGraw-Hill.
The program – like the book – provides a new leadership
framework for managers leading today’s evolving
organizations. The program curriculum is based on Prof. Miller’s
extensive research on leadership in a broad range of companies
in diverse sectors. It also spotlights numerous real-life
examples.
Among the key questions that today’s leaders face, he says,
are:
• how do I provide leadership in
a traditional organization that has to adapt quickly in the
international marketplace?
• how do I lead a team that is geographically dispersed
and whose members are often changing? |
The MCL program features unique pre- and post-program phases that
are designed to maximize the impact of the program for participants.
For a full 100 days following MCL, concepts that are presented
during the program are reinforced through a website designed to
monitor progress and provide daily updates on the world of leadership.
“MCL is an intensive program aimed at improving participants’
leadership skills immediately,” explains Prof. Miller. “Before
the participants arrive at IESE, we ask them and their teams to
evaluate their leadership skills. Then, while they are here,
they have the opportunity to assess their abilities and develop
a plan for improving their impact as a leaders.”
The program’s power lies in that it combines theory and
practice, he says.
“It’s like playing golf,“ he says, “It´s
about learning the concepts but then getting out a bucket of balls
and going out there and practicing in order to lower your handicap.
This program does the same thing. We cover the theory in
detail, we coach you and then for 100 days after the program you
continue to practice impoving your skills with our guidance.”
A key component of the program is the Leadership Forum, the web-based
tool that facilitates learning and assessment following the program.
Among the topics covered during the program are:
• the challenge of leading change during turbulent
times • assessing yourself as a leader
through a specially-developed Mirror Platform •
leading high-tech and low-tech contexts • leading
geographically dispersed teams • a phased approach
to leadership impact • aligning metrics to strategic
leadership initiatives |
The program is aimed at middle and upper-middle managers who aspire
to higher leadership positions in their organizations. In addition,
leaders who have recently taken on new positions will benefit
from the program.
Prof. Miller is professor in the Department of Managing
People in Organizations at IESE. He teaches in the areas of leadership
and change management, focusing on leading change in multinational
companies. He recently was recognized with an award from the American
Academy of Management for his work in the field of globally distributed
teams. The new MCL program is among IESE’s growing portfolio
of Short Focused Programs for executives. Led by IESE and faculty
from other leading schools and organizations, the programs target
specific management areas and provide intensive and personal learning
experiences.
“Mission Critical Leadership is one of a number of
trends and issues that IESE has identified as a hot topic
in the business world today,” says Mark Wuijten, Director
of Short Focused Programs. “They are addressed throughout
2006 in a series of short, highly focused courses: IESE Short
Focused Program Series.”
Another recent addition to the series is the Getting Things Done
program, which is focused on execution management. To register
