With government funding for research increasingly difficult to secure and companies' rising reliance on external partners for R&D, universities and industry are looking to each other to form partnerships. IESE alumnus Bill Layton is at the interface at Princeton University, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United States.

Executive Summary

Picture all the brilliant minds hard at work in universities, pushing forward the frontiers of their fields and sparking genuinely fresh ideas.

Now think of the sharp operators in industry, hungry for innovation and experts in putting theory into practice, at translating creativity into consumer solutions.

It’s said that between the idea and the action falls the shadow. IESE alumnus Bill Layton’s passion lies in breaching that gap. His job as Director of the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations at Princeton University is to foster mutually beneficial partnerships between universities and industry. It’s part of a rising trend in the U.S. to try to align avant-garde thinking and corporate objectives while preserving the integrity of academic research.
