Liebe IESE,

(Dear IESE,

Many thanks for the unique mix of first-rate teaching and a loving upkeep of contacts, which make us alumni always feel highly motivated to return to attend any IESE event! To me, IESE is a source of inspiration that never runs dry. Thanks to all the friends I have the pleasure of meeting through the PDD in which I participated.)

The encounter with IESE on the occasion of my PDG training in Madrid led me to also encounter the best pathways. With the expression of my acknowledgement and congratulations to the entire teaching and managerial staff.

General Manager of Services and Customer Care at EL CORTE INGLÉS

If there is one feature I would like to highlight about my stint as an IESE student, it was the sensation of how your mind was opening up to a heterodox vision of management problems. At times when the company is immersed in a process of ongoing change and taking on risks, in a world that is more uncertain than ever, having a demythifying, pragmatic approach is not only healthy but necessary. There is no doubt that your academic training gives you a methodological support and knowledge that makes it easier for you to get a basic grasp on problems, but that in itself it is not enough and makes you vulnerable when making decisions in an environment like today’s, full of unknowns and changing circumstances.

My training at IESE taught me to interpret this environment, to manage change, to approach situations from unique perspectives and how any problem is always susceptible to a solution. That solution may be more or less appropriate depending on a variety of variables, but I could see that the degree of information, the ability to innovate and the risk to take on are important when reaching the final decision. In short, at IESE I found a way of thinking and facing problems in scenarios of unstable equilibrium.

A luxury in these times, and an enormous satisfaction to see that now, when IESE is celebrating its 50th anniversary, it is more valid than ever.

Antonio Brufau (PDD-II-78)
Executive President of Repsol YP

IESE symbolizes integrity, diversity, teamwork and friendship. It's a unique place for professional and personal development, and I truly value my IESE friendships. I'm pleased to be part of such a wonderful network of people from all around the world. Congratulations to IESE on the 50th Anniversary!

As we reach such a special celebration, we are proud to see that even though many institutions started along similar lines, few have achieved the recognition and excellence of our alma mater. Life has shown that the success we seek in all the fruits we harvest tomorrow depends first on our choice of seed… and IESE is the best seed.

Vice President of CASA CONFORT

It is an honor for the Codorniu Group, as a sponsoring company, to be part of one of the most prominent business schools in the world. Personally, my experience at IESE enabled me to grow both as a human and as a professional, and for this reason I want to express my gratitude and congratulate this institution for having managed to stay at the peak during its entire 50 years of history.

I believe in IESE’s entrepreneurial and international spirit and in its zeal to keep up-to-date year after year. These virtues dovetails with those of the Codorniu Group, which from its start 450 years ago has grown in its steadfast passion for work and a desire for constant demands in quality.

A toast for all these years of success!

Mar Raventós (PADE-I-01)
President of CODORNÍU

Fifteen years after graduation, I have nothing but great memories of IESE. The faculty was outstanding. I vividly remember my classes with professors Ribera, Andreu and Valor on decision-making and information sciences, as well as Tim Sutton’s financial management classes, and I continue to apply what I learned in my role today. A few years ago, I was able to introduce a group of people from my company to one of IESE’s custom programs. The IESE team was incredibly accommodating, and the program was a huge success. Apart from the education I received, I also formed lasting friendships with my MBA classmates: we still meet annually for a week of sailing. When I reflect on this 50th anniversary milestone, and witness the ongoing expansion and progress the school has made since my graduation in 1992, I have every confidence in the future of the “Instituto.” Go IESE!

For me, the IESE “brand” communicates the values of effort, excitement, organization and balance.

EFFORT, because I remember when I was a child watching my father study for the PADE program, the same program which 25 years later would deprive me of weekends during an entire semester.

EXCITEMENT, because, if I shared anything at all with my wonderful fellow students in the program, it was the thrill that lasted from the first day until graduation day.

ORGANIZATION, because few institutions come to mind that would rival IESE’s level of organization, as reflected, for example, in flawless delivery of teaching materials and strict punctuality.

BALANCE, because beyond the business education it undoubtedly offers, IESE underscores the importance of striking a balance with each individual's work and family priorities.

Congratulations, IESE, on your 50th anniversary!

Luis Hernández de Cabanyes (PADE-I-00)

It¹s a long time since the very first pioneers founded the initiated University of Navarra and then the IESE Business School. It took a great deal of efforts! Countless small and great steps have been taken along this part to creating a highly professional educational institution, which now geatures among the best in the world.

It has helped so many people achieve their goals and has contributed enormosly towards creating a world befitting IESE's Founder's dreams.

I too have benn lucky enough to participate in the first Polish edition of the AMP course, which has broadened my knowledge and inspired me in so many ways. I am wnormously grateful! Happy birthay IESE!

I would like to congratulate IESE for its 50th Anniversary. IESE is a unique business school: In addition to its academic excellence, I personally have learnt in IESE some very important things in my professional life, such us perseverance to work for what is worthwhile, and humility to serve others in management roles. One anecdote that I will never forget is one professor who asked the class what we thought being a good “leader” was: after many well-intentioned but erroneous answers, she shouted to us: “To serve, that’s what a great leader is: a servant of others!” Years later, I cannot overemphasize how true I have found this to be.

On a personal note, I am currently working with Telefonica–O2 in Ireland (my professional contact details are below), where I moved with my family last year after 10 years in the Telefonica Group. The experience in a country such as Ireland, with a booming economy but that still has some catching up to do with Europe, particularly in the telecoms, has been terrific both professionally and also for my family. My wife Patricia and I have 6 little children (see attached picture from this Christmas in St. Stephen’s Green, in the heart of Dublin) and obviously one great thing about being here is that they are all learning English very rapidly. I have also been involved this year, as an alumni contact person, in a couple of Business Ethics seminars with the help of IESE for top managers and CEO’s of Irish companies, which were quite successful, and which we hope will eventually turn into a more stable presence for IESE in Ireland.

Best regards,

Juan Antonio Latasa (EMBA 97)
Head of Broadband Convergence New Business Development O2 Ireland

(To me, being part of IESE means two things: The first, conquered after two years of arduous study and good classes, was the high development of my analytical capacity and ability to solve real problems: the path to achieve our goals when acting as managers and leaders in our society. The second is known that the first meaning has been achieved thanks to outstanding competition and help among all my IESE colleagues, whom we can always count on, in any part of the world via email, telephone, or Skype!)

Nuno Saraiva de Ponte (MBA 05)

One of the greatest assets that IESE left me with was understanding how everything in this life, as our ill-fated friend and professor Pérez López said, is based on acting under the prism of TRANSCENDANT MOTIVATION. How lovely it is to do things while thinking about others!

Arturo Constantí Cuende (MBA ‘81)
General Manager of AUTO BUIGAS, S.L.

After being an IESE supplier for over 12 years, I decided that the time was right to sign up for a program and become a student.

Against the wishes of my boss, my personnel manager, and even against my own economic means, but with all my enthusiasm and the backing “nihil obstat” of my wife, I decided to do a PDD.

This experience at IESE has served me in three ways: first, to meet and learn from 60 extraordinary human beings, classmates, professors, the director and the secretary of the course; to write a great line on my CV; and to discover that my main limitation is myself.

Congratulations for 50! Thank you for everything. Congratulations to the entire IESE family for these 50 years of work, effort, success and enthusiasm. Thanks to my professors and graduating classmates of the PDG-2-2006, and especially thanks to my working group for those enviable six months of personal enrichment.

I regard my experience at IESE as totally positive, not only because I learned and interacted but also to show my limitations and work on them in order to harness them positively. I believe that it is something like a “bank of tests” from which you can extract a great deal of information in order to evolve both personally and professionally. This, in essence, is IESE’s differential value.

Thank you very much, and regards to all

The Real Value of My IESE MBA:

I first considered pursuing an MBA for all the typical reasons that you would assume: improved technical skills, an advanced degree; greater job prospects coupled with a higher salary. I then considered the IESE MBA for the additional reasons of studying with a truly international student body, immersing myself in the culture of a world-class city and preparing myself for an internationally-focused career.

Twenty years later I look back and am grateful to this institution for providing all those things and more. What I did not anticipate when I was in that period of "carpe diem" was that the 2 years I spent in Barcelona would continue to develop into a personal and professional relationship spanning 20+ years. During this period, I have had the privilege and the pleasure of dealing with a wide range of high integrity, dedicated and selfless individuals who in their everyday work demonstrate lessons not easily taught in the classroom. IESE is a singular institution that for 50 years has demonstrated how business, education and community can work to promote a better global environment for all persons. Congratulations to IESE on its 50th Anniversary but more importantly I would like to say THANK YOU to IESE for showing me the real value of an IESE MBA.

Mabuhay, Kung Shi, Hartelijk Gefeliciteerd, Tillykke, Enhorabuena, Felicitats, Mubarik Ho, Vadhayan, Herzlichen Gluck Wunsch, and Congratulations! Greetings in languages from places where I have lived, done business with, and have left some marks in my journeys across the globe.
IESE is always a home to come back to. Since finishing my MBA, a global career opened that has taken me to all the continents in the world in my various roles as parent, husband, corporate adviser, investment banker, energy expert and the incidental tourist.

Congratulations are expressed in diverse ways, inasmuch as people appear different from each other. Underneath these apparent differences, the spirit behind such greetings is a common desire for goodwill based on mutual respect, founded on trust and personal integrity. This is what I find to bind people - a lesson that confirms time and again what IESE stands for and imparts to its students and its wider community.

Ricardo Barcelona (MBA 1985)
Head, Structured Finance and M&A- Europe SHELL GAS & POWER INTERNATIONAL B.V.

The experience of my years as an agricultural leader, now a territorial leader, is the basic idea I learned at IESE. People, their training, and their commitment to the actions undertaken are the keys to personal and business-institutional success. Thanks, IESE, for being faithful to the ideas of the driving force behind the University of Navarra and Saint Josémaría.

Felipe González de Canales López-Obrero (PADE-II-89)

IESE was a very special place for Monica and me, since here we began the aventure of marriage in a wonderful study environment.

It is a place where you keep feeling more and more like a part of your alma mater, and not just because they talk about it but also because they demonstrate it and you feel proud of it.

Special congratulations to Dr. Carlos Cabelle and Dr. Jordi Canals, “my deans,” for all their devotion and MAJOR achievements by consolidating IESE as a leading benchmark worldwide.

Thanks IESE! And happy 50th!

(My congratulations to IESE as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, and to everyone who is and has been part of this school throughout its history.

My stay at IESE was marked by lovely memories and unforgettable experiences not just because I had the chance to learn and improve my knowledge through the MBA program, but also because at the same time I met wonderful people who have come to be part of my life and have given me so much on a human level. IESE was a very important stage in my life, and I am pleased to be able to share these 50 years of life with you.)

From Paris, where I am preparing my candidacy for the World Presidency of Engineering Organizations, I wish to congratulate the University of Navarra and the IESE faculty and congratulate all of us on this, our 50th anniversary.

I especially wish to congratulate in the memory of those graduating classmates who are no longer with us.

And also argue as to why IESE, our school, is unique. It was already unique back in 1989.

The theory that accompanied the case studies was only, but only the bare necessity. Rigorous, organized, it descended to the level in which the concept became axiom. The mathematical support was only a run on the ladder to later address decision-making when valuing the case study rigorously.

The case study analysis was always undertaken within its macroeconomic context, and also within its social context. Imagine how much I, as a woman, as the mother of several children, this necessary dimension to be integrated into the process of work-family reconciliation that is so often discussed today. Back in 1989, in IESE’s classrooms, it was just another factor in the debates. Ilearned so much! At that time, ethics was understood by many of the professors not as an option but as a demand for the bottom line. Time and again they repeated that the solutions were not the only ones and in the mechanistic process they were trying to develop for decision-making, they stressed the necessary evaluation of the consequences derived from the alternative chosen. I remembered so much of it afterward! What a shame that many directors – almost all of them men – of prominent corporations in our country have not studied at IESE!

The logistics also seemed unique to men. The documentation always arrived just on time, neither early nor late, without mistakes, the pages duly numbered. Also unique was the way of managing its international dimensions, not because it was in several countries on the planet but because of the harmony it seeks to extract from their presence.

A final argument: it is also unique because when giving a “turn of the screw” to its founding principles, back in 1989 this untouchable underpinning that we all have, I clearly saw the relevancy, the need to include women with their own vision in centers of decision making. I, a woman, a mother, was already in the business world, in paid economic activity, with perspectives of different approaches. I offered to act as a coach for the next course. They applauded, thrilled.

My training at IESE allowed me to learn to notice a good market opportunity, as well as to design and implement a solid business plan. But also, and no less importantly, to always take the human into account as the backbone of all our decisions. Training based on practical experience, along with the relationships I forged, have helped me enormously throughout my entire career.

Having been part of IESE and continuing to be part of it means learning a different way of doing things in your professional and personal life. It means always walking on the sunnier side of the street. My deepest congratulations for our “first” 50th anniversary.

To me IESE has been a global, balanced experience in the personal, academic and professional sense, and its advantages extend over time and space thanks to IESE’s efforts to keep us linked and shrinking the geographical and cultural differences. May it last many more years…

My congratulations to IESE on its 50th anniversary. I am part of the PADE 04 graduating class, and since then I have felt like  apart of this large family. I work in public administration, specifically in National Heritage, and IESE’s teachings along with the contact with professors and classmates have enabled me to gain a new vision of the solutions that should be applied in management. I think that this type of training is especially useful for public administration employees, as it brings us closer to society, thus achieving more effective management of the public sector.

Best regards,

Hello to all of you on the IESE team:

I only wanted to state how pleasant and incomparable experience it was to do the PADE at IESE several years ago.

The human and professional quality of the professors, the impeccable organization that worked each day like a Swiss watch, and what I learned during the months it lasted, without failing to mention what it meant to have met unforgettable classmates – whom I keep meeting with every year – was and will be a source of knowledge that I’ll never forget.

Thanks to all of you for making it possible.

May keep spreading your know-how for much longer.

Cordially,

Carlos Galcerán (PADE-I-01)
CEO of COGESA

IESE and I are turning fifty the same year, and I am very pleased by the institution’s efforts and what it has contributed to my developed since I finished my MBA in ’83, which was then the second time the master’s program was offered in English. Personally, I can report that I’ve suffered a traffic accident that almost sent me to the hereafter, and once again the shows of support that I received from IESE and its team were highly gratifying and very helpful under these trying circumstances. Thank you for these 50 years, and I wish you all the best for the next 50!  Special regards to Juan Masía.

Fernando Masiá (MBA 83)

Hello to everyone!

I’m too young and too much a newcomer as an alumnus to take stock of what my stint at IESE has meant for me. The only thing I can say is that five months before finishing my MEBA, I only have fond memories and a bit of nostalgia. I hope and wish to keep this spirit of intellectual ambition and healthy camaraderie that all of us, professors and classmates alike, create.

Congratulations to IESE and to the University of Navarra for their efforts to constantly improve, which has led this business school to be among the top worldwide. I hope and wish that this attitude continues in the future and that, when IESE is celebrating its centennial, we can keep preaching the same qualities of  IESE. (And may we be there to see it!)

José Luis RUIZ BARTOLOMÉ (EMBA-S-07)
General Manager of S.S.G.A ALMINARA, S.L.

To me, being part of the large IESE family has been a very strong reinforcement in my professional and personal development as an entrepreneur. I have also earned lots of new friends.

Jaume Sanabras, (PDG -1- 99)

We all have friends or acquaintances who have done the PADE program, and from all of them, absolutely all of them, we’ve heard wonderful words. So wonderful that sometimes, even before beginning, we had questioned after having taken management courses with results that were difficult to apply to everyday management.

When arriving at IESE, after the thrill of returning to the university classrooms, once the course began the first thing that called my attention was.

-The magnificent and relaxing setting (much more so now with the new campus)
-The quality of the organization
-Everything was positive
-Everything was personalized
-Exhaustive track kept of time (which at first almost annoyed us and now we praise)
-The word. No, paradoxically, it didn’t exist
-The organization of the 55 students into working groups fostered interactions in an extraordinary way and the joint preparation of the case studies very productively
-Soon, the “hidden surprise”. In addition to the 12.5 hours of in situ classes every week, they “warn” us about needing to spend around 16 hours more per week, in addition to classroom time, that until then we thought would be filled with company and family.
-They almost gave us 55 people a “heart attack and a disheartening beginning in case we couldn’t take it”. If until then we spent a great deal of time at work, and everything we could with the family, a third player, the PADE program, entered the game, and with a very high priority.

But then, after 2-3 weeks, the magic of IESE appears, and its enormous, almost 50-year experience in teaching, and it shows us the more realistic facet in a very determining way:

-It shows us that the classes are eminently practical, conducted by a faculty with extensive experience, able to instill in us both academic rigor and the latest international trends in business management, something that does not seem at all easy but that they are able to transform into something simple, pleasant, agreeable and at times even fun.

-They make us work in teams and share experiences. Heterogeneous human teams made up of people with different types of education and careers, and with very singular individual features.

I have to admit that some of the things that most captured my attention were:

1) The quality, experience and professionalism of the professors, who with an enviable simplicity manage to transfer academic rigor to the professional practice so admirably that they made us undertake an honest process of self-criticism and reflect deeply on future decision-making.

2) The quality, experience and humanity of the students, which makes the group meetings and plenary sessions be at an extremely high level despite the heterogeneity of the groups.

3) The organization, and allow me to personalize this first in Tomás tomeo, due to his professionalism, planning, rigor, know-how and patience to keep up a homogeneity in the group and an interaction with the faculty in such a praiseworthy manner, and secondly in Joana, an organized, attentive, devoted person who is always at her place, organized and extremely efficient.

Personally, in these months in the PADE program I have to admit that I have already applied some of the conclusions from the practical courses a few times in my professional life.

As a person who comes from a technical academic field, namely Medicine, and who gradually, by taking courses, learning every day, being fairly self-taught and after ten years in senior management and two more as the general manager of a pharmaceutical company, a course with such scientific and academic rigor such as the PADE has made me:

- Reflect profoundly, undertake honest self-criticism and taken a dose of humility.

-Learn to think “outside the box.”

-Not be so endogamic as the pharmaceutical industry where I work.

-Improve my analyses of situations.

-Appreciate human values much more.

-Make decisions on a much more solid, objective foundation.

I am totally confident that right now the PADE program is the most necessary program for any General Manager who wants to improve his or her way of managing and leading, accepting and at the same time adapting to the major changes that are taking place in our business and work setting.

I send you my deepest congratulations for this special celebration of IESE’s first 50 years, and I wish you the utmost success in at least your next 50 years.

Very special thanks to the organization and the faculty for the seriousness, meticulousness, professionalism, efficiency and scientific rigor with which they prepare and explain the cases we debate. I will always remember them and will no doubt come to them in the future in case of need.

And finally I wish to congratulate all PADE-1-2007 students for this vast family created in this PADE, who together total 900 years of experience and who have begun to transform themselves into nine centuries of cooperation and good fellowship.

Jordi Estruch,M.D (PADE-1-07)
Vice President of GMA Europe Region 1 & 2 of UCB Pharma, S.A

I congratulate IESE for its priceless educational efforts.  It is an institution that is internationally acclaimed as one of the top business schools in Europe, and the ones who can best testify to this are we alumni ourselves, day after day in our environment.

I wanted to extend my congratulations to everyone who somehow is part of this school. We have a strong sense of pride for belonging, as well as a true sense of collegiality and friendship.

I feel very grateful to IESE’s spirit of excellence, as well as to its culture of training in values that it so skillfully integrates: training and education, humanism and enterprise. It seamlessly combines professional and personal development by using an approach that centers on people, on the need to serve people and society, that I have tried to convey in my company’s philosophy.

There is no doubt that IESE’s key to success is nothing other than the quest for integrity and professional and personal excellence: people are at the core of its activities.

Congratulations are also due to the formidable faculty due to its ability and specialized and state-of-the-art practical and real training.

Finally, I wanted to express my gratitude specifically to the generosity of the IESE delegation in Pamplona, for the chance it gives us, me and my management team, to be constantly up-to-date through its monthly session. They are a true help.

Those of us who were once an IESE student will be one for all our lives.
