8th IESE Job Fair

Another fruitful encounter between students and companies

More than forty companies from Spain, Holland, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom and Brazil took part last January 23 in IESE's 8th Job Fair. MBA students had the opportunity to meet companies that, in the near future, may employ them

"It's essential to spend the time talking to the people who could be our future colleagues. This type of event gives us the opportunity to establish some mutual feedback between business schools and companies, bringing the students into the real world. It's a pleasant surprise to see how IESE takes note, year after year, of the companies' indications and offers students who know how to solve real problems", noted Michael Oliver, of AMS.

Most of the participating com-panies collaborate assiduously with the Career Management Center. However, the Job Fair offers the added bonus of direct contact with the candidates. "The information that appears on the résumé is interesting", commented Hewlett Packard, "but it's much more effective to speak to the students for ten minutes and put a face on the résumé".

The students agree. The Job Fair is a good opportunity to find out who the companies really are, what importance they have in the national context, what they are looking for and if what we have to offer might interest them.

Many of the Job Fair participants were looking for specific candidates with the "IESE profile". "We want graduates with leadership potential, the capacity for teamwork, the ability to plan ahead, and motivation to work", remarked Marks and Spencer.

Other companies, however, were interested in meeting graduates, also with the "IESE profile", who were able to assimilate the company's culture and enter their own corporate training programs. "We haven't come looking for a specific candidate, but rather for profiles with the potential to be trained", indicated Boehringer Ingelheim. "We believe in the knowledge imparted by IESE and in their method of imparting it"", added Disneyland Paris. The companies' general impression was positive. The representatives of Disneyland Paris, for example, were impressed by the students' reactions. "People have a very clear grasp of what they want", they commented.

Gain time for the future

As always, everyone had cases to solve and studying to do for the next day. Nevertheless, G-building overflowed with interested students, hoping for the opportunity to find out more about the participating companies. "Once you finish studying, you have to work. Meeting companies to work with them isn't study time wasted, but rather gained for the future", said Pablo Echart. "The Job Fair gives students the opportunity to step outside the normal recruiting process. We can approach several companies on the same afternoon and get a better feeling about their needs, expectations and culture", said Michael Quaine. Arantxa Gazulla pointed out the opportunity the Job Fair offered to learn to sell oneself. "I think it's good training for introducing yourself, selling yourself, for learning how to behave with those who could be your bosses", she said.

 What is the Job Fair?

The Job Fair is an event prepared to facilitate informal encounters between students and companies with the aim of exchanging infor-mation directly. Companies do not always come with specific job openings, but rather with an interest in meeting potential candidates who may be of interest to them in the near future.

It is a good opportunity for students to meet companies in order to gain first-hand information on what companies do, and the kind of positions and career path organizations can offer.
