More than 150 professionals from 30 countries met at IESE's Barcelona campus to attend EurOMA's 4th International Conference.

During the congress, the association's members attended the presentations of papers and took part in discussions on teaching and research in the field of Operations Management.

The theme of this year's conference was: "Managing Service Operations: Lessons from the service and the manufacturing sectors". Over a period of four days, almost 100 articles were presented. These were discussed in parallel sessions held on Monday and Tuesday.

Wednesday began with a presentation of teaching materials on the subject of services management by IESE Professor Luis Mª Huete. The day ended with a visit to the first Spanish theme park, Port Aventura, situated between Salou and Vila-Seca (Tarragona).

During the visit, the participants in the 4th Conference were welcomed by the park's managers and had the opportunity to learn first hand about the challenges of managing Port Aventura. Professor Earl Sasser, from Harvard Business School, gave the conference's centerpiece lecture on the state of the art of service company management, following the lines of his recent book "The Service Profit Chain".

The Conference's attendees also visited the Palau de la Generalitat, where they were met by the Catalan government's Finance Minister, Antoni Subirà.

The Minister thanked the congress's organizers and EurOMA's president for having chosen IESE, Barcelona and Catalonia as the venue for this year's congress. Antoni Subirà accompanied the visitors in a stroll around the Palau de la Generalitat.

The visit concluded with a cocktail in the Pati dels Tarongers before leaving for the Llotja de Mar's Gothic salon for the gala dinner.

The papers read at the congress have been included in a book edited by professors Jaume Ribera and Mª Julia Prats and published by IESE on behalf of EurOMA. The book is on sale at IESE's bookstore

What is EurOMA

Its roots

The European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) was formed in 1993, taking as its starting point the English association OMA-UK, which had been operating since 1984. EurOMA is Europe's leading professional association and includes among its membership academics and managers interested in the development of Operations Management. IESE professor Jaume Ribera is a founder member of the association and is a member of its executive board.

International meetings

EurOMA organizes a yearly international congress. The previous years' congresses were held in Cambridge, Twente and London.
Next year's congress will be held in June 1998 in Dublin. EurOMA also sponsors a series of thematic conferences during the year and the publication of a quarterly newsletter and a scientific review, the International Journal of Operations and Production Management.
