Minister of Industry visits CEIBS

Professor Pedro Nueno, Sergio Balcells, IESE exchange student, Josep Piqué, Spanish Ministry of Industry and Energy, Enrique Gibert, Sergi Quintó, and Gabriel Sáenz, IESE exchange students

On November 1, 1997, Josep Piqué, the Spanish Minister of Industry and Energy, visited the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), in Shanghai, where he gave a talk on the re- structuring of the public sector, which is currently an area of intense debate in China. IESE is one of the member schools of the CEIBS's Academic Board.
In the photo, Mr Piqué appears beside four 2nd year IESE MBA students who are taking part in the MBA exchange program between IESE and CEIBS. During the second year of their MBA, IESE students have the opportunity of spending a term in a foreign school of acknowledged repute (Chicago; Wharton; London Business School; University of California, Los Angeles; Berkeley; Kelo-Tokyo; IPADE; CEIBS-Shanghai, etc.).
Mr. Piqué discussed the differ-rent industrial restructuring and privatization approaches that his ministry had implemented. Differ-ent business situations had requir-red different formats. The Minister mentioned, for example, cases such as Endesa, Aceralia and Santa Bárbara. After the decision made in the last Communist Party congress to slowly but surely rationalize the inefficient public sector, the Chinese government authorities are keenly interested in learning about the models that have worked elsewhere.

Career Management Center

Management in Health Institutions

In the week of October 20-25, a group of 33 managers of the health sectors of Argentina, Uruguay and Chile, attended the International Mod-ule of the Management of Health Institutions at the Barcelona Campus of IESE. This week was the final act of a six-month, one day per week course organized by the Universidad Austral in Argentina. The participants followed this one-week course with case discussions and lectures focused on three main areas: Quality management in Health Care, Conflict Resolution in Personnel Management, and Technology Management. In the last two days, the participants were introduced to issues related to the Span-ish Health System structure, and visited the Institut Dexeus, the Mútua de Terrassa, and the Clínica Universitaria de Navarra.
The course was organized by Professor Juan Carlos di Lucca, from the Universidad Austral and Professor Jaume Ribera, from IESE. Professors Santiago Alvarez de Mon, Carlos García Prat, Josep Valor, and Dr Magda Rosenmöller completed the course faculty.

Two IESE case studies win efmd prizes

"The Internationalization of Telefónica España S. A.", by IESE professors Joan Enric Ricart, Carlos García Pont and Christian Knief won the efmd prize in the cat-egory of international business.
"This case study of Telefónica" says Professor Joan Enric Ricart describes the competitive position and strategy of Spain's telecommunications service provider. Until recently, the company enjoyed a monopoly and confined its operations to the Spanish market. Rapid technol-ogical change and the process of re-regulation in many countries mean the industry has also undergone fundamental change. Competition has increased and many companies have internationalized and forged a great number of strategic alliances."
"Farggi", a case study by IESE Professor Lluís G. Renart and Francisco Parés, won the efmd prize in the category of retailing.
Häagen Dazs opened its first Spanish ice cream parlor in Barcelona in August 1992. Farggi, a small Spanish family-owned company opened its own first luxury ice cream store just a few blocks away in July 1993. According to a Häagen Dazs executive, Farggi had been their best, fastest and most thorough emulator anywhere in the world. How did they do it? IESE Professor Lluís G. Renart provides some of the answers. "This case study is an example of how a small local company can compete against a very large multinational corporation", he says.

Carlos Cavallé appointed to the efmd board

Professor Carlos Cavallé, IESE's Dean, has been appointed a board member of the efmd (European Foundation for Management Development) board member. The efmd is an international association with scientific and pedagog-ical objectives open to institutions and other organisations active in Europe in management development, and to persons who have a professional interest in management development.
