January 22, 1998 - 9th IESE Job Fair

People who can see tomorrow today

More companies than ever attended Job Fair '98 this year, an annual event at IESE which allows this year's crop of MBA students to make informal contact with the people who may turn out to be their future employers and permits companies to seek out the managers of the future. G Building was practically bursting at the seams last month as 111 representatives from 38 different countries from around the globe met up with the MBA class of '98

So what brings so many top companies to IESE every year? Allied Domecq decided to come on the recommendation of one of their staff, a graduate of IESE herself. "We don't usually go round to universities, but there is a very strong link here," says Allied Domecq's Margaret Harnett, "and IESE has an extremely good reputation."

Harald Schedl of Krupp Group sees the Job Fair as a good opportunity to get in touch with students and the school itself as his company is planning to send some of its top executives to IESE's International Executive Program. "The experience of coming to IESE is definitely worth it," he says. "From what I have seen of the students and the kind of qualifications they have, they really match the profile we are looking for." He also admits to being pleasantly surprised to find so many students who speak German as well as English, something which is important when working for a German multinational.

Philips centers its recruitment program on what it calls "the first league of European business schools" including IESE, the London Business School and INSEAD, according to Philips' Roland Dierick. He points out that the profile of the kind of person they are looking for is changing. "In the past we focused more on very specific technical or job-related skills," he says. "Now we primarily look at leadership potential and say that no matter what business background they've got, they can learn about the electronics business fast."

Richard Smith of Ford Motor Company is looking for mature marketing people with an MBA to join his team. "We are looking for change agents, people who can shift the whole direction of our European business to become more customer-focused and lead us into the new millennium," he says. Ford has come to IESE as part of a round of visits which take in "the leading international business schools in Europe."

Change is also a buzz word for Allied Domecq's Margaret Harnett. "We need very strong change managers, people who are not only comfortable with change, but actual proponents of it," she says. "This is not something you develop, you either have it or you don't. We need people who can see tomorrow today."

Beatriz Nistral, now into her second year of IESE's MBA program, finds the Job Fair very useful. "It gives you the chance to get to know lots of different companies and see whether they offer good opportunities for your career," she says. "You sometimes find out things you would never have known otherwise." She appreciates the more relaxed atmosphere of the encounter, so different from a formal job interview: "In an interview you are pretty nervous, what if you really want the job and you don't give a good interview?"

She believes that her time at IESE has given her a solid preparation which will help her find her future career path.

 What is the Job Fair?

The Job Fair is an annual event designed to allow students and companies to meet up and ex-change information in an informal atmosphere. Companies may not come with specific posts to fill, but rather out of a desire to meet people who may be of interest to them in the near future. For students, Job Fair'98 provides a good opportunity to meet potential future employers and gain first-hand information on what companies do and what kind of careers these organizations can offer.
