For years, there was a widespread belief that everyone, everywhere wanted the same thing. Globalization was fashionable and people tended to believe that we were moving towards a perfectly integrated planet. Yet, according to IESE Visiting Professor Pankaj Ghemawat and IESE Professor of General Management Joan Enric Ricart, international events like the Asian crisis and the September 11 terrorist attacks have complicated the equation. Globalization is no longer as simple as it once seemed.

Professor Ghemawat, the Jaime and Josefina Chua Tiampo Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, has spent the last year at IESE studying globalization in the new economic environment. During his stay, he contributed to IESE´s Anselmo Rubiralta Center for Globalization and Strategy, which is devoted to research on the forces shaping the global economy.

Professor Ricart is IESE’s Associate Dean for Research and the PhD Program and Chairman of the General Management Department, as well as founding President of the European Academy of Management. Here, Professors Ghemawat and Ricart share their thoughts on the future of cross-border business.
