How Can
RFID Increase Business Productivity?
“Packetizing” the Real World
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
technology is on the verge of taking off, with giant retailer
Wal-Mart as one of biggests proponents. In the near future, this
tracking technology will change the way retailers distribute and
sell goods. It’s time for business leaders to sit down and
think about how RFID will impact their distribution activities
and beyond.
Executive Summary
Wal-Mart, Gillette, Metro, Tesco's and other
top retailers are leading the way towards a future driven by RFID
technology. RFID promises to improve business practices at all
levels, from the manufacturer through to the consumer. Not only
will it dramatically reduce costs of tracking goods across the
supply chain, it also seems likely to fundamentally change the
way companies operate basic elements of the supply chain, such
as warehouses. As it gets cheaper to manufacture RFID or "smart"
tags, the technology will gain enough momentum to affect retailers
at large. We believe also that RFID could ultimately influence
the winning retail formats of the future, as well as the kinds
of products and packages that companies design.
