The Asian Tsunami
Will This Too Be Forgotten?
Troubled by the massive destruction in Southeast Asia inflicted
by the tsunami’s killer waves, IESE Professor Guido Stein
reflects on how the December tragedy has impacted our moral conscience.
Have we, as a society, become numb to suffering, or did the aftermath
bring out our best?
How could it be possible? The sea snatches away 300,000 lives,
leaving a trail of desolation and dashing even the most lowly
hopes of those affected by the tsunami. And yet hardly a month
later, I have stopped thinking about it. The news story had become
so horrific that it was more comfortable just to look away. I
hope writing this article will give me a rather undeserved second
chance to consider the impact of the tragedy.
